Checklist

Your first apartment, room by room.

You don’t need everything on day one. Here’s what to have when you move in, what can wait a month, and the sizes to check before you order.

Day one

  • Bed frame and mattress (or at least the mattress).
  • Somewhere to sit: a sofa, or two chairs.
  • A table and chairs to eat and work at.
  • Curtains or blinds for the bedroom.
  • One lamp per room: ceiling lights are rarely enough in the evening.

The first month

  • Wardrobe or clothes rail, and a chest of drawers.
  • Bedside tables and a reading lamp.
  • Coffee table or side table.
  • Bookcase or shelves.
  • A rug for the living room.

Typical sizes to check

Typical furniture sizes (width × depth)
PieceTypical size
Double bed (Europe)140 × 200 cm
Queen bed (US)152 × 203 cm
Two-seat sofa140–180 × 85–95 cm
Three-seat sofa190–230 × 85–100 cm
Dining table for four120–140 × 75–80 cm
Wardrobe100–200 × 58–60 cm

Also measure the front door, the stairwell and any tight turns: a sofa that fits the room can still get stuck in the hallway.

See it in your room first

Before you order the big pieces, see them in a photo of your new room. Upload one to redsgn, paste a product link or let the furnish chat choose, and the AI shows the piece in your room using the shop’s dimensions.

Questions

What people ask.

What furniture do you need in a first apartment?

On day one: a bed, somewhere to sit, a table and chairs, curtains and a lamp per room. Storage, bedside tables, a rug and shelves can follow in the first month.

How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the door width and height and compare them with the sofa’s depth and height (it usually goes through on its side). Check tight corners and stairs too.
